Position Summary


The Opportunities and Initiatives Analyst will work closely with corporate, business unit, and functional leadership to understand, prioritize, and ultimately align resources toward GreatAmerica’s key strategic opportunities and initiatives.  This position will ensure that GreatAmerica’s overall portfolio of opportunities and initiatives is fully understood and consistently, efficiently, and effectively executed upon. This includes multiple areas of focus, including; (1) personally driving and ensuring strong execution for corporate opportunities and initiatives, (2) the ongoing monitoring and reporting on business unit and functional initiatives that have been directly resourced, (3) the aggregation of new opportunities and initiatives from leadership and GreatAmerica team members, (4) working with senior leadership to assist in setting the prioritization of opportunities and initiatives that require the assignment of additional resources, (5) the supervision of the assignment of resources to key opportunities and initiatives, and ultimately, (6) ensuring strong project management skill is applied to the portfolio of prioritized opportunities and initiatives (e.g. clear responsibility, scheduling, milestones, and execution, etc).  There are four primary functions associated with this role:


  • Execution (60% allocation of time):
    • For certain needs as identified by leadership, personally own and drive opportunities and initiatives, working in collaboration with appropriate business unit and functional area to assure successful and timely completion
    • For other opportunities and initiatives, act as high-level portfolio project manager to ensure that the responsible and accountable parties make requisite progress. Ultimately, take ownership of pushing for the on-time and successful execution of all opportunities and initiatives in accordance with prioritized roadmap
    • Provide ongoing reporting on progress to senior leadership and interested parties
    • Monitor for scope creep; keep opportunities and initiatives on task and on budget
    • Initiate post-implementation review and evaluation


  • Opportunities and Initiative Governance (20% allocation of time):
    • Compile portfolio of all corporate, business unit, and functional opportunities and initiatives
    • Align opportunities and initiative portfolio with the overall strategic plan for GreatAmerica. Evaluate potential conflicts and/or redundancies between existing and proposed plans
    • Develop a process to regularly track, and consistently report upon, progress toward all opportunities and initiatives generated across the organization.Properly categorize opportunities and initiatives based on source, impact, timeline, and resource needs
    • Ensure opportunities and initiatives are fully vetted within GreatAmerica’s Business Case process guidelines. Provide guidance and input into the development of articulate business cases


  • Prioritization (10% allocation of time):
    • Working closely with the Office of the President and other senior leadership, ensure that all opportunities and initiatives are identified and properly prioritized. Develop processes to evaluate prioritization with interested leaders from across the business
    • Balance competing needs to ensure alignment with the strategic objectives of GreatAmerica. Properly weigh the need for new strategic change vs. continued operational efficiencies when making prioritization recommendations
    • Manage portfolio based on business demands and available resources.Develop long-term roadmap of opportunities and initiatives


  • Resource Alignment (10% allocation of time):
    • Work closely with leadership to identify clear RACI diagram for all opportunities and initiatives across the organization.Develop and present clear understanding of which resources are working on what across the opportunities and initiatives portfolio
    • Ensure understanding of resources dedicated to all opportunities and initiatives. Where necessary, help secure corporate resources for key opportunities and initiatives that have not been resourced within the business unit or function
    • Administer pool of team members have been identified as resources for opportunities and initiatives. Work with unit and functional leadership to provide development opportunities to GreatAmerica team members from across the business by assigning initiatives
    • Serve as mentor and resource to all team members and project teams delivering upon opportunities and initiatives priorities

This role will apply proven communication, analytical and problem-solving skills. Regular communication with key stakeholders across GreatAmerica will be crucial. This role requires a person that is a self-directed with strong communication, analytical, influential leadership, and problem solving skills.

  • Relationships:
    • Provide ownership and key point of contact for opportunities and initiatives
    • Work closely with Information Technology team and their project prioritization process
    • Develop relationships with identified opportunities and initiative resource team members
    • Understand priorities of various corporate, business unit, and functional leadership
  • Communication:
    • Develop strong lines of communication with all internal stakeholders
    • Regularly communicate strategic direction and status of all outstanding requests/projects to leadership
  • Coordination:
    • Internally, must interface with various departments and functional teams
    • Strong project management skills, both of the portfolio and of projects that are personally assigned.
  • Innovation:
    • Understand the complete opportunities and initiatives portfolio.Identify potential solutions that address the needs of multiple business units or functions
    • Vet potential new market, industry and/or product/solution opportunities for GreatAmerica, based on external trends across our various markets
    • Work closely with the leadership to understand new opportunities of potential interest which require research, risk evaluation and/or program structuring

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required.


Experience: Minimum seven-to-ten (7-10) years of work experience.  Demonstrated experience in successfully leading large scale opportunities and initiative type projects.  Project Management experience is ideal.
